-[Networking Part 2]-

For my second networking event I attended the event ‘Pearls to Pros,’ that was located in downtown Grand Rapids at University Room Club room that is on campus. While going into this event I did have have any expectations or really much knowledge of what this was going to entail. What I soon realized was that this event was going to have one of the biggest influences on me to get more involved with my major, I gained a lot of realistic profound advices from alumni students that were once sitting in the very seat I was sitting in. 

The event started with a elder man taking on front and center of the crowd, and introduces himself, “I’m Frank Blossom.” What I didn’t know what that he was someone that I desperately wanted to get in contact with, and not only that but also to build up my connection with him. I learned that he was a prominent professor at GVSU, and I was going to be pursuing him as a future CAPSTONE class. Out of the nine alumni that spoke, they all spoke of professor Blossom and how he has significantly raised their status in the world thanks to that man. 

In the major of advertising and public relations, it can feel like a big world, and your dreams become far fetched. But listening to the alumni’s talking about their experiences, and their journey’s to become young and professional business people it was inspiring to me to hear that it is all for a greater purpose. After this event I felt like my mind academically was much more optimistic about the opportunities that I could unlock for myself, because I know that when you studying your major, you can get lost in what your doing and why you’re doing it. This event was a friendly reminder that your hard work is going to pay off, and you will be successful if you put your full heart into something. 

In the end I gained so much inspiration and motivation from this event, much more so then I ever thought I could have. I believe that the reason that it had such an impact on me was because they were so relevant to my time, and my position. They were relatable and most importantly realistic, I believe that what I learned there was nothing that I could learn inside of a classroom. Personally, I believe the most valuable aspect of life is to learn from others, and I was fortunate enough to be apart of exactly that.

-[Networking Part 1]-

For my first part of my networking events that I completed, I chose to go to the career center. This actually became very relevant for me, because I am currently applying to jobs for The State of Michigan, and they require a very well-rounded resume. I had previously worked there, and got in with a mediocre resume, but I knew I needed to take it to the next level. So I proceeded by going to the career center in the student services building in the Allendale campus, and I requested a consultant for a walk in appointment.

She at first asked me what I was trying to focus on today while I was with her, and I told her I really felt like I wanted my resume to better represent me. I had a problem with thinking that my resume was too plan, and did not have have the ‘wow’ factor that I thought that some were supposed to have. My resume was simply black and white, with barely any graphics or anything. The first thing she offered was a packet that had plentiful amount of examples and explanations of different resumes depending on what message you were intending for. However, she said that simplicity goes so far, and that anyone that you would talk to here would say that clear and concise is the way to go if you want to keep the employer engaged at all. The consultant as well said that an easy way to pick up inspiration is to look on Google of other resumes, obviously not to copy it, but to bounce ideas from is a great direction. She also suggested that what she has seen being successful for students is the use of subcategories within sections. For instance, having ‘customer service’ inside of your work experience so that if you were to apply to an area that is predominantly with customer service that can help them determine your skills sets in that area. 

Overall, I found a great deal of the information I got from the career center very applicable. I did not know much about this center, and now I was able get exposed to it, I have a very strong feeling that I will be coming here for a lot more as my as I get closer to getting out to the business world. They have a lot of relevant advice that I found relatable, because the consultants at least the one I worked with was in the same shoes I was in, and it helped me to grasp what she meant and why a lot easier. I am grateful to have found a workshop that is not dominated educationally, but more so to prepare you or the world a head of you.

-[Social Media Opinion Piece]-

I personally use social media as a time capsule for my life, and I use it almost as a life marking or capture, I rely heavily on my reflections. Mainly it’s more of a recreational use for a mind stimulating activity, it allows me to feel involved and relevant to a world outside of my own. I use a lot of my social media as a way to keep updated with current events around the world and the people around me. 

Honestly, I believe that other people have been using social media as more of a promotional factor. There is a prominent trend that is growing in millennia’s worlds today of monopolizing on their social media to enhance their status, and this has become the new way that people are starting to brand themselves. Social media is a pretty mundane job, so I think that it was innovative to use media vehicles as something more useful than just posting things with no meaning for it. 

The most beneficial aspect of I think of social media is that the distance limitation no longer becomes a barrier. I have fully taken advantage of the capabilities that social media offers when it comes to keeping up with people that are not always accessible due to my location. Research from Sue Scheff, author, parent, and family internet expert explains that although there tends to be a bad connotation with social media, that we as a community were able to take advantages of the benefits of social media and flourish, regardless of the negative outlooks, because we made progress. This as well aids the consequences of becoming absence with people, it allows you to be able to feel like you haven’t lost connections with people, because you don’t have to.

However, I think that the largest drawback that social media has is that it has desensitized the world around us.  I think we have convinced ourselves that social media is a justification of good communication, we use it to convey messages because we feel that we can bond with the platform, rather than forming that physical connection with others. A main concern for many of the general public is that it is starting to heavily influence the minds of young children, even through the development stage, which can be the most crucial and can determine the direction of the rest of their life (Potarazu, 2015)

All in all I think that the clearest and most concise way that I can put the way I feel about social media is that it allows the ability to act fast, and be involved. On the other hand though, regardless of the information put on the internet, it says there forever, and it can limits the ability for that information to be truly applicable and realistic (Friedman, 2016).

Throughout the current generation, like I said previously, I think that social media has become a prominent factor in promoting themselves to a high status. Although, I do think that today social media is used more today for a sense of importance, we update those platforms because we want people to know what we’re doing and when. I think that for obvious reasons it has become selfish and superficial, but I do think that we would be where we are today without it. I think that it has paved the way to the milestone that this generation is trying to be remembered for. For me personally, especially with my major, I think that social media has opened up so many opportunities for myself, because that can be a whole job in itself. So I am grateful for what it has done, but I think there will always be drawbacks when change is being enacted and executed.

Step 1: Learn about what Google Analytics is

Step 2: Take the ‘Digital Analytics Fundamentals‘ test

This is located on the previous page that was indicated in step 1, it should contain 20 questions to asses your knowledge.

Step 4: Evaluation

After finally passing this test, I was able to get certified to allow me to fully use the various functions that Google has to offer. This gave me the basic fundamentals , which can become applicable to my daily life. I knew that this was going to open up new opportunities for  me when I am trying to move forward with my career, and while  I am promoting myself as an up and coming business person. This goes hand in hand with the ‘Brand Yourself‘ and about the Google Ad word posts that I previously made,  and this helps bring relevance to this project as well. 

The most interesting thing that I found was that although I knew that there was responsibilities that came with having an account, but the diverse amount of activities that you can participate with is pretty incredible. I think that the most interesting section that I saw during this tutorial was about the extensive techniques that are used to make your journey more of a success. I know that I still have a lot of room for improvement and learning, and I think that searching around and learning the new technology will be half the fun of getting to know more about Analytics and what Google has to offer as a promotional tool for yourself. 


-[Future of my Blog]-

I persoanlly will be keeping my CAP 105 blog, I believe that no harm could come from having a blog, so I see no reason to be deleting it. If anything comes out of this, I think that it will would be something positive. In the field that I’m going into with an advertising and public relations, having the capability o maintain and update a blog is almost a unspoken requirement to allow you in the field properly. We I have heard success stories, people on the road to success, or are recruiting future workers, having a blog site that can help you start to brand yourself and show your future encounters who you are and what you stand for. Although this blog is derived from projects and agendas, I think that it is a great way to keep up on my skills so I would be able to showcase my growth and my progress and where I am currently.

This blog acts as a temporary portfolio, and I think that it so important when trying to  monopolize your brand to others. However, that comes with making sure that everything that is on here is impressive in my eyes. Though I may delete posts here and there that I think weren’t as up to par,  I will be continuously adding to it, so better stuff will be on here.  I do not see any irking cons that could come of showcasing hard work, just the polishing of it and the consistency with who you are is important when keeping something like this. I am grateful that I was exposed to this type of monopolizing, because when I think back to when I declared my major, this did not cross my mind a something that would have an impact on me. Not just the blog itself, but the ability to know the capabilities of getting to know yourself, I think that it so important. I believe this has helped me find a unique theme that I accompany myself with now, because I had to develop this page.

Step 3: Evaluate

I was excited to get involved with this project, because it was so relevant and related to my life today. Not necessarily directly towards me, but more so indirectly towards the people that I follow. I personally follow many celebrities, from actors, to singers, to musicians, etc. and I do appreciate them keeping me updated on what is going on. For instance, being able to keep up on  upcoming events, breaking news, and new songs is why I follow anyone on any platform, not just twitter. We know that celebrities get busy, so I could imagine why they or their PR team would use this technique to keep their followers interested and aware of them.

However, for me personally I would not use this as much, this is due to the fact that I really don’t have any obligations to anyone to keep them updated. The concept of twitter is selfish in the way that we tweet, we tweet only when we want, and what about. On the other hand, there are people that rely heavily on the idea that this is a platform to satisfy and fulfill other people’s lives that they tweet to to keep us happy, so this is a method to accomplish this for them. I think that for the right audience, this is a tool that if use right can be dangerous and be monopolized into a greater purpose.

While I was exploring through these websites, I gained a lot of insight about what opportunities are open for me in the future. As I am getting more into my major and minor, to me it started to seem like such a far fetched goal to get an internship or job with the competition so tight. However, what I discovered was that there was a massive array of jobs and internships that were in my skill range (obviously while still growing into my skills), and this made me much more optimistic to what the real business world has to offer me. 

What I thought was extremely helpful and interesting from these websites that there was defaulted categories and keywords that you could type in, and they all applied to me. This showed the multiple variations that the work force has to offer. This as well offered so many alternative options for the certain states that you preferred, and I thought it was a really personable way to have a balance between what you need (the job) and what you want (the location). All together these are very clever and relevant websites that I can see myself using in the future outside of this blog report!

-[InDesign Project]-

Step 1: Open the InDesign platform, and create a new document

For this specific project we had to create a business card, and the dimensions of the card was required to be 88 mm wide by 55 mm high. 

Step 2: Start drafting the different elements on your business card

This is so that you have a general idea to go off of, because it can get overwhelming with all of the tools InDesign provides for you. Having a blank canvas can become troublesome when you don’t have a starting point.

Step 3: Add all of the information that you would like your potential business partners to know about you

Step 5: Evaluation 

This project was definitely pushing me out of my comfort zone, I was not knowledgable about InDesign. This was the first time I have ever used this platform before, and to me I believe that this new skill will impact me greatly. For many of my other classes I am enrolled in this year we ave been focusing on media planning, and well as copywriting. I am currently managing a hypothetical campaign, and I must create multiple advertisements for my specific brand. You can see challenge with that when not having the basic knowledge of these different designing programs other than Word. 

While I was creating my business card I thought it was going to be somewhat mediocre, as I was no familiar with this system at all. However, I really enjoyed being able to explore by myself and understand InDesign better,  I realized that it really comes with practice and time. Once you started to familiarize yourself, it became quite easy, considering that it was a small business card, but when I was showing family and friends they all were rather impressed. Knowing that advertisements and actions plans today use this system  to develop campaigns from scratch was eye opening, because it made me feel more involved with my major that I was taking steps to grow and be more practical.

Step 3: Go through the process of manipulating the results when searching your name

You can decide to whether or not a website associated with your name is positive, negative, or not you at all. This allows you to bury and boost your sites according to the ranking that it shows on google. 

Step 4: Evaluation 

For me I think this was the most interesting and relatable project to me. We all at one point have searched our name, and I remember before this class I was somewhat displeased with what was initially showing up when you would type in my name. The links that were popping up were not necessarily anything worrisome, however, I would have rather had things dominate the higher rankings. I was always curious about how to get certain thing off or at least in a sense buried. So it was exciting to see something relatable and relevant could be taught later in my class. 

This concept really makes you think about what you decide to engage yourself in, because I know that if at the time I knew what the consequences were to get involved with those websites I would not have. Those pictures and links that identify with me will more or less be with me forever, even after I deleted my accounts, I would have to go through extensive steps to go through with it. This was important to me, because people that don’t know you have nothing to go off of but what can be found, and you want that to be as pristine as possible. Professionalism is motivate when doing this.

For instance, I talked about my major, my personality traits, what I plan to do and become in the future, what I desire to be, as well as contact information to get a hold of me.

Step 4: Evaluate

Although this project may have seemed mundane and simple, this serves a much greater purpose than what it meets the eye. For a lack of a better name, I was able to create a electronic business card. This allows much more information to be shown, and it is flexible with specifically what you want, as well as it allows you to be updated with your connections while networks. This starts the ideal of branding yourself, which we currently have learned in our class, because this in turn sets the tone of your personal and business life. 

This really shed light on the idea of the importance of first impressions, and how they can either be the beginning or the end. This shows versatility, as well as awareness that you as the brand is informed of the alternative ways to reach your peers. Nameplates give you the ability to be ahead of the game and be prepared when business cards may not be able to be used accessed, but could impact the beginning of a new connection.
